Clarinetist, Evan Christopher is a refreshingly bright light on
the international jazz scene. He combines virtuosity, immaculate taste, and
enthusiasm with a deep commitment to capturing the full range of musical
possibilities that come from having strong roots in the idioms of New Orleans
jazz and the Créole clarinet style.
Django à la Créole is the fusion of Gypsy swing with hot syncopations from the
streets of New Orleans, the Caribbean and Brazil

Notes:
The Manouche musical legacy, the gift of
a Gypsy Prince continues to cast its spell and enchant us still. This
album is a celebration of our adopted music.
It combines material familiar from the canon of
Django's Art together with new material and melodies, less familiar. Nick
and I recorded it on a day in April 2009 on a range of JWC Guitars
including a nylon strung 14 fret Classic.
These Guitars, made by Jeongwoo Cho, for JWC
Guitars inspire and invoke the Gypsy Spirit. Track 2 is our
tribute to him.
In addition, our friend the veteran Jazz Guitarist
Jack Toogood inspired Track 5
The variety of instruments allowed us to explore
contrasts, colours, tones, textures and most importantly, mood and atmosphere.
Playing essentially Manouche Music on JWC Guitars with a rhythm guitarist
who is not only your cousin but your lifelong accompanist, is always a joy,
indeed the whole day was a joy. It was - The Day of the Manouche! - Paul Vernon Chester
Duets For Django
Paul's live album release
"Duets for Django" from a recently recorded live performance at Concert Jazz in Thame
on 14th March 07 and his
very productive repertoire has yielded sufficient material for perhaps even
more releases.
These are now fully mixed and perfected for your final assessment.
Artwork was resolved and the title formulated. A real must purchase for those that
could or perhaps could not attended that magical
evening with an enraptured audience enjoying the fine rapport between Paul and
his cousin Nick Mellor - lifelong collaborator on Rhythm Guitar..

Accessible jazz a hit at arts centre
A FAST-FINGERED
night of gypsy and hot club jazz was
brilliantly executed at Bridgwater Arts Centre last Saturday (2nd June
07).
Raising money for Penrose School, Roger
Collett presented guitarists Paul Vernon Chester and his cousin Nick
Mellor who took the audience back to 1930s Paris through some
exceptional musicianship. Feet were tapping in the packed arts centre
after the opening few bars of I Can't Give You Anything But Love, only
stopping for the exquisite ballads and injections of stories about their
musical icon, Django Reinhardt.
The impact of Django runs deep through
modern guitar, his music influenced many performers from Dire Strait's
Mark Knopfler to blues legend BB King but it is Paul and Nick that claim
to be the 21st century heirs of his legacy. And it is understandable why
- the dedication they showed through the night was fascinating to watch,
the detail and accuracy in every number was captivating.
Moulding classical music into a light and
delicate sound and putting well-known songs though a hot club jazz
interpretation, Paul and Nick produced a set of unadulterated music that
celebrated life and love. During the night, they performed tracks
including Nuages, Douce Ambiance, the hauntingly beautiful Anouman and
the brilliant gypsy anthem Minor Swing, each with total passion and
commitment to the music they have taken on as their own.
I sometimes find jazz difficult to listen
to, but this was approachable and accessible music, light-hearted and
fun - a real joy to take in.
The drive from rhythm guitarist Nick
against the intricate - although seemingly easy - determination from
Paul, made the set of colourful, emotional music an absolute success!!
