Tricky Tricks

The Two string Fill

This is a trick Django employs as a fill while Noodling. It's not something you can do often but is very dramatic when put in at the right moment. Used to best effect while your rhythm section is hammering out an E7 chord.

Imagine you are tuning your guitar starting on the high E string.

O.K Grab the guitar and come back.

2nd Finger on 5th fret B string

Imagine your shaking out a match with your pick as the match.

Strum the B and E strings as fast as you can.

1st Finger on to G string 4th fret. Releasing 2nd finger.

Strum G and B strings as fast as you can. Come on faster!

2nd Finger onto D string 5th fret. Releasing 1st finger.

Strum D and G strings.

1st finger onto A string 5th fret.

Strum A and D strings.

2nd finger onto Low E string 5th fret.

Strum E and A strings.

Now PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!

The Chromatic Run Part 1:

Don't expect to get this right first time. It is something that will take a little time to perfect.

It's easy to explain but hard to get up to speed.

Fig 1. Shows the playing order not fingers.

Use 2nd finger for all notes except for the 2nd note (F#), which uses the first finger.

       3rd Fret

Go slow to begin with, playing close attention to even up and down pick strokes. Also accurate finger position when striking the note.

When you can play this and it sounds tight, add more notes as you go up the fret board.

The Chromatic Run Part 2:

This one is tricky to get sorted and to play it right you need to have somewhere in your veins a bit of Gypsy blood. Press the play button and you'll see I'm a bit anaemic.

I play this as follows:
All fingered notes played with 1st and 2nd and 3rd fingers (3rd finger slides up to 4th fret and up to 5th on notes 24 and 25.) You however must find your own style.

E 20!-21--!--22-!--23-!--24-!--25-!
B 15!-16--!-17--!-18--!-19--!
G 11!-12--!-13--!-14--!-----!
D 6!--7--!--8--!--9--!-10--!
A 1!--2--!--3--!--4--!--5--!
E !-----!-----!-----!-----!

Play button below plays my feeble effort as does newcrom.au
