PAUL VERNON CHESTER

Manouche Maestro

UK Manouche Jazz Swing Club Groups

‘Jazz Manouche’, ‘Gypsy Swing’, ‘Hot Club de Paris’ – whatever you prefer to call it – is the romantic, swinging style of jazz started in pre-war Paris by the Belgian guitar genius Django Reinhardt. Come and experience a great evening of atmospheric Gypsy Jazz, with a Hot Club style Quintette followed by an open jam session.
The house band – will kick the evening off at 8.00pm. Other musicians are welcome to join in later on, in the great tradition of gypsy jazz, until late in the evening. Just turn-up and play – or sit back and enjoy the show. Modest entry charge may apply.

Objectives of Club Django

  • To meet other players of Gypsy Jazz on a regular basis, to play the music of 'The Hot Club of France.'
  • To further our understanding and playing of the Gypsy Jazz genre.
  • To play gigs at local community/charity functions as a 'Club Django' on a no-fee charity basis.
  • To accept paying gigs, as and when available.
  • To invite the best professional players for 'Masterclass' evenings.
  • 8-12 Members meet regularly for exchanges of ideas.

The first Masterclass was in February 2006 was with Dave Kelbie, who plays rhythm for Lollo Mier, Angelo Debarre, John Etheridge, Fapy Lafetane and the great Birelli Legrane.

(The Gypsy's all start out playing rhythm and so students should concentrate on this aspect.)
More Classes are planned throughout the year.

Any players out there come on down from 7 pm onwards . Make your presence known (wave instrument cases in our general direction), & I’m sure we can rustle up an All of Me in C…Any spectators out there, it’s a nice place, lots of continental beers, £10 a bottle of house wine, plenty of space – its ok to just come down for a drink – ordering food is not a pre-requisite but highly recommended the chefs are wonderful and the food delightful. We’re aiming for a gentle relaxed atmosphere, there’s enough room to sit near the band & listen properly, or sit away from the band & chat to friends. It’s all good.

And if you don't play an instrument come down anyway and sit back and enjoy the (hopefully!?) great music! This is our first event of this kind and we plan on making this a regular (twice a month) fixture so come down and help us to make this first one a success! Look forward to seeing you all there!
